There are two very powerful women running huge companies right now: Sheryl Sandberg as Facebook's Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Marissa Mayer as Yahoo!'s Chief Executive Officer (CEO.) Plus, March is Women's History Month. So we think it's only appropriate to talk about successful women -- and how people view them.

A recent article in Slate magazine, aptly ****** "Why Do We Hate Successful Women?", talks of the media and public backlash toward successful women like Sandberg and Mayer and even suggests that society hates them because they are not "like us." Do you think society has learned to dislike powerful women? Or is the article just making a bold statement without much evidence? Like always, we'll let you decide.

SLATE.COM reports:
It’s one of our current ironies that the same liberal people complaining that there are not enough women CEOs seem to harbor a special contempt for the women CEOs we do have. We like to say there aren’t enough women in the higher echelons of spectacularly successful business people, but when women do rise to those echelons, we attack them for that spectacular success.

I agree. I'm a corporate officer with my company and have been here for 23 years. So I'm in a position to make many decisions on behalf of the company. I always do what's best for the company. Many people have tried to go over my head to appeal to my male boss to no avail lol All they *** up doing is making me angry and I will shut them out. The worst guy I ever dealt with was an Arab business owner. In their culture women do not call the shots so it was quite difficult for him to accept my decision. He was furious. *** result, our company does not do business with him :)

Based on what do we come to this **********? Honestly I'm largely apathetic in regards to who runs a Corporation. So if a women is successful I don't hate her. Mostly I don't care.

The fact the she is a "woman" has NOTHING to do with why people dislike her.

Not neccesarily, but that may well play a part.

Yes, even though most of them make better leaders than most men, and I think it's because men are jealous of their success.

not really it depends on one's experience what you are claiming is ******. And it also depends on what circumstances people are being led. Someone could just as easily say "well historically men have lead to the civilization we have now" , but that doesn't work since we don't know what would have happened if the opposite was possible. Honestly the person who is more experienced and has the most credibility should get the leadership position not one based on gender.

society really doesn't want women to be powerful and successful than men.

I wouldn't say they are hated but they certainly face more obstacles then men. If a woman is good in business, she is a *****. When men do a good job in business they are considered good business men. It's ok though, I will continue to be the ***** and get the job done!

But they are becoming so, and this will continue, whatever society thinks.

I am a very skilled salesperson and all I've encountered is male jealousy and subterfuge... I thought in the year 2013 that it was accepted that women were equal.....oh contrare... not that women aren't a big impediment also....to be an independent and strong women today breeds great contempt and attacks...I hate it and am now looking at being an entrepreneur again (ran own business 20 years)....I havevowed to myself never to work for anyone else ever again...when you the boss no one gives you any @*#$!... Granted I am in a male dominated business but that's no excuse...

I would ignore it. The reason is jealousy. Enjoy their jealousy.

I wouldn't mind being considered a *****. You can't change peope's minds. But they will have to accept that you are better than them- and that is why they would get called a *****.

Some do, some don't. I respect these ladies. I may not a of their opinions, but I respect them for wheer they are. This should be celebrated. Those who are attacking them without just cause are merely jealous. They cannot be where these women are, and so their only tool is jealous reprisals.

No, but a lot if people are intimidated by strong women.

I am a Republican and if you let the left liberal media, they will make you think that the right is waging a war against women. This is not correct. According to my wife who is the Alpha person in my family, it is secretaries and mothers who secretly run the world. I truly believe this myself. Most women that surround me...are highly independent, intelligent, go getters, don't waste my time, very well read and **** headed women.

By the way, we need more women to come forward and become leaders of the free world. Especially, in countries like Iran, Iraq, Afghanista, and all of the middleast where women are looked as underdogs and are there to serve men only. Women can rise to any level they choose here in the U.S. My favorite woman in leadership is Condoleza Rice, Margaret Thatcher, Sojourner Truth, and so on. My least favorite..."We must pass the obamacare bill first before we understand it"....Nancy Pelosi and Barbara Boxer...who disrespects anyone and everyone, because that is who she is. She belives being an arrogant S.O.B. that is leadersip.

This is true. The reason I am not a lefties is that they are ntolerant to different forms of women. They ****** that if you are against abortion, for example, you are anti-women. That is such a simplistic generalisation! I remain an independent.

It still might be the case. The mentalities are evolving slowly, and there are men who cannot admit that women are as good as men - considering the many countries were women are no more than second class citizens.

Many other people, men and women, will envy them for their wealth or their privileges.

And they might be seen as arrogant or too dominating by low ranking employees.

Many think that the poor are lazy or unable people, and unfortunately, privileged ones still tend to believe that unemployed and homeless people did not work **** enough or took the wrong decision. Maybe that this attitude is criticised by social welfare organisations.

Personally, I think that it is good that the share of women in leading positions is increasing.

If bosses of both genders are considering figures rather than playing with inefficient charity actions, it is their right, of course: they have to think business and performance first. Rather than charity, the promotion of more jobs in stable, sustainable enterprises should be preferred.

What I would expect from female bosses? Sober organisation, i.e. fair, motivating work conditions, recognition of **** work, no corruption, no bullying and no ******, the sense of responsibility and sustainable management. Such principles are important...

Such principles are important, as quality, performance and the reputation of businesses are at stake, and I believe that women tend to take more precautions than men in case of risky transactions.

Now, about promoting women's rights, a few high-ranking women are not in a sufficient number to raise the masses. But many young women will try to imitate them, as far as they can transmit values like fair trade, the development of local businesses and a sustainable policy.

i think society doent "hate" them so much as they are threatened by them. and not all society, just those in our society who happen to be somewhat insecure in their own life/role, etc. a man who worked **** in a particular industry may think "why did she make it so far?" a woman may think a sucessful high profile woman reminds her of what she didnt do.of course, the answer is, these women got where they are the same way men do-through dedication and **** work.were just not used to seeing it pay off, as gender roles have changed so much in the past 50 years.

Through **** work and a concerted effort, women who previously could not participate in the workforce have achieved much success. In 2010, 46.7 percent of all American workers were women. And according to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, women constituted 36.5 percent of all managerial positions in 2009. Still, women are the target of ****** words and treatment in the workplace. If left unchecked, ****** has a negative impact not on just female employees but their male coworkers and the overall organization as well.
