Regardless of the reasons, I see this as a fantastic turn of events for the citizens of New York.. NYC cops are returning to. . .gasp. . .basic policing! Control freaks have to be crapping bricks over this. No more busts for victimless crimes! No more drug arrests, traffic citations, etc. Just bare-bones peace officer type stuff. City revenues must be taking a nosedive!

I can't believe I'm saying this, but HURRAY for NYC Cops!

It’s not a slowdown — it’s a virtual work stoppage.

NYPD traffic tickets and summonses for minor offenses have dropped off by a staggering 94 percent following the execution of two cops — as officers feel betrayed by the mayor and fear for their safety, The Post has learned.

The dramatic drop comes as Police Commissioner Bill Bratton and Mayor Bill de Blasio plan to hold an emergency summit on Tuesday with the heads of the five police unions to try to close the widening rift between cops and the administration.

The unprecedented meeting is being held at the new Police Academy in Queens at 2 p.m., sources said.

Angry union leaders have ordered drastic measures for their members since the Dec. 20 ************* of two NYPD cops in a patrol car, including that two units respond to every call.

It has helped contribute to a nose dive in low-level policing, with overall arrests down 66 percent for the week starting Dec. 22 compared with the same period in 2013, stats show.

Citations for traffic violations fell by 94 percent, from 10,069 to 587, during that time frame.

Summonses for low-level offenses like public drinking and urination also plunged 94 percent — from 4,831 to 300.

Even parking violations are way down, dropping by 92 percent, from 14,699 to 1,241.

Drug arrests by cops ******** to the NYPD’s Organized Crime Control Bureau — which are part of the overall number — dropped by 84 percent, from 382 to 63.

The Post obtained the numbers hours after revealing that cops were turning a blind eye to some minor crimes and making arrests only “when they have to” since the execution-style shootings of Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu.
Modal Trigger

Statistics obtained by The Post show a dramatic drop in NYPD activity between Dec. 22 — the first weekday after the double cop ************* — and Sunday, compared with the same period last year.

Police sources said Monday that safety concerns were the main reason for the dropoff in police activity, but added that some cops were mounting an undeclared slowdown in protest of de Blasio’s response to the non-indictment in the police chokehold death of Eric Garner.

“The call last week from the PBA is what started it, but this has been simmering for a long time,” one source said.

“This is not a slowdown for slowdown’s sake. Cops are concerned, after the reaction from City Hall on the Garner case, about de Blasio not backing them.”

The Patrolmen’s Benevolent *********** has warned its members to put their safety first and not make arrests “unless absolutely necessary.”

Sergeants Benevolent *********** President Ed Mullins told The Post he’s glad de Blasio is meeting with the unions, but worries that it’s just a publicity stunt.

“I’m disappointed in the issuance of a press release announcing the meeting, which now raises concerns of sincerity,” he said.

“Is this about politics or is it about working through problems?”

Hallelujah!

Though I'll inject a ponder...

I see many claiming that this is the perfect time for violent criminals, who commit crimes with actual victims, to roam the streets freely victimizing their prey as they needn't worry the police will arrest them.

I only want to point out that the police have stopped enforcing victimless crimes, specifically traffic violations and other revenue generating laws. So truth be told, even if they were policing as usual, they likely wouldn't be running down thieves and violent criminals, they'd be standing at the window of a car writing tickets. lol

I think all cops should take a lesson in that. Especially small city cops, who basically work for the city revenue. Handing out traffic tickets like it's their bread and ******.

So, Tranny, you think traffic violations are victimless? Seriously? Never heard of anyone killed when someone ran a red light or lost control while speeding and clipped a pedestrian? I've got a friend in a wheelchair who might disagree. You'll say, "Oh, but Mr. Fire, sir, those are criminal violations and they'd be prosecuted." And yes, maybe a lot of such sneaking through the red lights or ignoring signs will not result in death or destruction. The likelihood that something WILL happen is, however, greatly increased because of all the morons that know running the light, for example, won't get punished and will do it more often. Why do you think there are traffic regulations in the first place, just so that oppressive governments can make money? ****, why have any laws, or why even have police for that matter since we are all so capable of behaving with concern for our fellow human beings?

Not to mention the fact that the traffic accidents are among the leading causes of death in this country. However, this fact is too difficult to grasp for so many here, who foolishly express their delight of the fact that the police stop acting against traffic violations.

Exactly. I think we can all agree there are bad cops and worthless regulations. But it's also true that the good ones play a vital role in protecting us from ourselves and keeping society civil.

"...protecting us from ourselves..."

Sorry, I don't grant that as true...

"Ourselves", meaning preventing humans from going human on each other's *****. Not protect you from you.

Did our govt. prevent some humans from "going human on each other" during 9/11 or the Boston Marathon or Sandy Hook or any of the other countless examples used to justify more intrusive laws that consistently fail to proffer solutions to any of the problems for which they were purposed?

Is it even rational to believe that any amount of govt. can ever "prevent" crime? Humans cannot predict the future, much less prevent it from occurring.

Law is purposed to punish criminal acts, not prevent them.

No, it's impossibe to prevent all crime. We don't live in The Minority Report world. However, are you aware that real crimes are committed? This question is not about post 911 laws intruding on privacy, it's about the need for police or the biased ********** that because some of the many police are corrupt, stupid, violent bigots and/or Republican that we should do away with them all and because of one warped, temporary stat they aren't needed at all.

****, those boys and girls are dumb. Despite whatever message they think they are sending, the observable result is that if you kill a couple of them the rest will quit hassling people.

You are jumping from one extreme to another, nothing more.

You submit that the Libertarian push for less restrictive govt. is rooted in the fantasy that people are primarily good and rational. The truth is that the push for less restrictive govt. is rooted in the idea that people can be corrupted and as such should not have power to dictate the choices of others.

Now you submit that proposing less restrictive govt. is based on the illusion that power can be destroyed outright. This too is incorrect.

I am ****** naive enough to believe power can be eliminated and I'm certainly not suggesting it can or even should be.

What I suggest is not that power should be eliminated, but rather the legal initiation of force against nonaggressive people.

It isn't working out right now, the current system is failing. Whether or not some hypothetical, nonexistent system you think I'm supporting will or will not fail is completely irrelevant to the fact that the current system is failing to protect rights in the here and now, and innocent people are suffering dire, unjust consequences under the current, existing system.

Your fears or concerns about hypothetical systems are irrelevant to that.

Correct.

But then, as I've opined for years, your basic bully with a badge is a coward. It's easy to beat up on someone you know to be defenseless. It's a **** of another matter when the victim fights back as they're doing now.

Well now.....let us witness what happens when there is an absence of law enforcement

I would surmise, given time there is going to be an increase in lawlessness in a variety of ways.

Problem is most people are law abiding citizens and do not engage in any criminal activities....but they live amongst the criminals and their criminal activities while commonly being effected by the crime, directly or indirectly

In effect, the people that welcome the law enforcement will be penalized in an indirect way by this new police agenda that will result in social ramifications that will not be tolerated for any length of time when people are being negatively effected by the lawlessness that would otherwise be minimized to a tolerable degree when there are police officers around to hold people accountable for their conduct and or criminal activities.

Cheers

The standard lib/con response: but there are laws to be enforced, OBEY! OBEY! OBEY!

Is it not intriguing though, that all of a sudden these cops grow a spine---not because they realize the people shouldn't be subjected to such horrid policies---but because they believe authority has abandoned them.

Proof positive they know how to refuse to enforce and are perfectly willing to do so, but for all the wrong reasons. Shameful...

Why is that the opposite? It's still quasi religious fantasy.

Perhaps I live in a world where pondering a question premised on the idea that there could be human society without a stratum of power if only we could abandon what official power constructs there are currently and just trust it will all work out for the best seems pointless.

Petty crime will *** up being big crime, it has nothing to do with revenue. Remember Dinkins? This communist will drag the city down with him.

There's nothing I'd like to see more than a return to the basic nobility of being a peace officer. If that means I had to donate a grand to the police benevolent *********** or whatever, I'd consider it the best money I ever spent!

As nice as it may be, 'fraid it's temporary. They need cops to bust head and induce fear, so the tax base won't come unglued.
Think on this; tasers are mere adaptations of cattle prods.

Maybe they'll let the thugs take the city over until the people realize how important the police are and quit criminalizing them for doing their jobs.

Yeah, now we can run red lights, drag race on city streets, throw trash out the windows, turn the stereo up and point it out the window at 3AM, carry open liquor, hit people, break windows, deal easier...paradise!

We need the cops to go after the bad guys and to stop harassing people because they forget to check their license plate illumination lights on a daily basis.

hmmm, focus on violent crime and not the petty stuff, not a bad idea! they're not supposed to be tax collectors, they're supposed to protect us!

Quite the opposite, actually. The libertarian dream is that otherwise innocent people are no longer harassed by the state for no good reason at all.

It falls far short of believing humans are pleasant rational creatures.

Perhaps* you should ponder this, though... If you recognize that humans are irrational and incapable of humanity, why on earth would you set them in positions of power to rule over other humans?

Awesome! *Giving self congratulatory pat on back* lol

This is a libertarian dream come true, and from the NYPD no less... Life is strange, huh?

Will be interesting to see how that goes tonight when the ball drops. For some reason I have the sneaking suspicion that life as we know it will not* come to *** and the city of NY will not grind to a halt.

Happy New Year, btw :)

1) Self-congratulation is a form of masturbation, you know this right? :-)

2) Indeed it is!! There is a ***, and He (or She) has an equally awesome sense of humor.

3) Let's not get carried away here. The more likely scenario is that a 'surprise' terrorist attack will be facilitated by a marked absence of police--thereby cementing the notion that we need thugs in blue to protect us. Same old Hegelian control drama, different day.

4) You, too, my friend.

Precisely: a libertarian dream come true. My point exactly. Libertarianism is a religious belief where suddenly, once freed from the oppression of regulations, humans become rationa, thoughtful and respectful of each other. As much a fantasy as my own youthful indulgence, communism. I gave that up decades ago when I realized humans, left to themselves, are incapable of humanity.
