I wonder if anyone ever heard of this company before this? I never heard of them, but the fire that happened there had an effect on workplace safety. But I didn't know it helped spur on the growth of the International Ladies' Garment Workers Union.

When I first read about this a few years ago I was horrified. This is why unionization was fought for, not just from a safety aspect but also for workers rights.

Wal-Mart carries on the tradition of locking their employees in.

Just one of the reasons we need unions.

I remember being in the 8th grade, and having an entire history lesson based on this alone. By the time the bell rang, I almost felt emotionally drained. It's maddening, that it always has to come down to a tragedy, before positive changes are made. Thanks for the info!

Yes, it is a shame that we have to learn our lessons like that.

More of us need to learn more about this kind of thing. The past is always influencing the present, the easiest example is looking in the night sky and seeing all the twinkle of stars that have burnt out 1000s of years ago, but who's light is reaching us just now.

I watched the movie about it as a small ***** and in high school we watched a documentary and had to do a report about it. I thought it was so odd that the exits were blocked as if the woman were prisoners. This country has come along way in regards to workplace regulations, we need to look closely when politicians start yelling "deregulation" to make sure it is something that is not a plan that includes compromising worker safety.

I knew about this. My grandmother was a seamstress. It's an illustration as to what can happen when capitalism has no regulations and unions did not exist.

I vaguely remember that. Didn't they have the workers locked inside the building. And people complain about OSHA.

Thank heavens that we have moved our worker safety problems to Asia. They don't feel pain like we do !

Yes I have heard of it. PBS actually did a special documentary on it. Maybe you could find it online. It was a terrible tragedy and many, many women died. But it resulted in new workplace rules and probably prevented many more tragedies. Too bad it takes that to change the corporate mindset.

This may have changed america but it didn't do anything for the rest of the world?

In the UK the origins of Health & Safety in the work place started in 1833 with the Factories Act. and later the Mines Act 1842, then 1895 the Quarry Act. and the Agriculture Act 1956.

Now Health & Safety is a joke, with risk ********** requirement and certificates in just about every conceivable manual job known to mankind...

Commonsense appears to have dissapeared completely...

I'm not surprised that Britain is nothing more than a service industry and a poor one at that...
