Are society's values deteriorating? If you think so, why do you think this is happening?

Question

According to an article I read, the author suggested that society's values are deteriorating because there is less religion. As a result, there is a lack of morals and ethics, disrespect for elders, no longer a commitment to marriage and family, all resulting in compromised integrity and honesty.

I am certain that Atheists would be of the opinion that society's values are deteriorating because there is too much religion.

Either way, I have a feeling that most people will agree, whether religious or not - that values are deteriorating in today's society.

Do you think that society's values are deteriorating? If so, why do you think this is happening?


What is your viewpoint? I'm interested in hearing from people from all
backgrounds - whether you are involved in Christianity, Scientology,

I spend time with a lot of different groups and cultures because I like to study society and I haven't noticed it deteriorating now I'm not saying there's no problems of course there are but there always has been there has been no society where problems haven't seemed like they were tearing it apart but what's ironic is that most of the time what causes a society to crumble have been the people screaming that society is becoming wrong or that we need to go back to the old ways it's not the newest groups but the oldest ones that cause tension.

I would love to read the article. I agree 100% with that author. I have long said that our society's moral values are rapidly going down the toilet. Until people turn back to ***, it won't improve.

What I see of the work force where I live they (or we) are already weak and whinny as a group! Ofcourse I work where the employer does not care about the employee and it shows so most employees have some reason to whine; still, they could move on or do the job and do it right. . . but that is not what I see happening.

Well to be honest just look in a history book of us culture back in the 20's parents thought teens were crazy when they became flappers and listened to jazz then in the 50's it was greasers and rock n roll then the 60-70 era with hippies 80-90s with heavy metal and rap and now it's pop music and the Internet you see the pattern? Older generations always think the younger ones are lazy disrespectful and dumb while the young generations rebel against the ideas of the older generations it's just part of society

Maybe??..I don't know what my parents generation was saying. The technology aspect of life has really changed over the last 15 years so I tend to think that has a major influenece on the "everything now and free" generation.

No I don't think so.

If I had to say one thing about society is the newer generations are so lazy. Why that's the case I have no idea but to me its a serious issue. 20 years from now the workforce will be weak and whinny.

I feel it is obvious the values are fading away but do not tie it to religion at all. People as a whole or mass go thru stages of immorality and then go back to guidelines and rules. Compare the 20's to the 50's and you wil see that to be the case. I think we lack any role models. Maybe a large amount of the "Baby Boomers" did not feel their parents focus was on them enough. . . it was a time when the 2 household incomes was just beginning to be thought of seriously and some homemaking wives and mothers was working outside of the house as well. As a result maybe some ******** felt cheated of time or attention so when they grew older they showered thier own ******** with ****** near anything and now today the society has forgotten much on manners and self worth and how to make and do for themselves without a hand out. We have gone too far one direction and then over-corrected repeatedly in the past. We just need more role models and much much better media putting out better messages and focus of attention than what we see now.

I do think a lack of religion or a sense of being here for a purpose other than just to take up space is a big part of the problem. We as a society have become to slack in what we expect from each other -- respect and courtesy. Not making light of or joking about things that aren't funny - like the recent commercial joking about "cheat on your girlfriend, not your workout". I think when people - especially young people - hear that sort of thing it often sticks with them and takes part in forming how they think about things - what's acceptable and what is not. I think television has plays a big part in the problem also -- too many things on prime time television that ******** don't need to be seeing and hearing. It's taken decades for us to get to this point -- it's gotten progressively worse -- "parents" not being "parents" -not teaching their ******** to be respectful and courteous. Often, just letting them basically raise themselves - other than what they get at school - and that's not enough. That's a start ........

I agree that values are deteriorating. I think it has a lot to do with the internet. Kids are exposed to more trash. Parents have become lax and lazy - and TV and the like has taken over.

Yes I do think they are deteriorating. I think there are many factors that contribute to it . I think SOME parents don't instill values or morals in their ********. People are so busy with non contact communicating that they don't, in my opinion, learn or remember to be kind and thoughtful when they are communicating without cell phones, text's email ect. I'm almost afraid to say this because I don't want to be attacked by those who have different views than I do but I do think some religious structure is needed. I see people show disrespect for the elderly because they move a little slower or take a little longer to do things but I think people need to remember they will be those old people some day and maybe they could just show a little patience and compassion. Many people think it's okay to steel from the government, collecting benefit checks, food ********** and medical care when they are working a cash paying job. This affects all of us, we all contribute tax dollars. Some have the attitude "hooray for me and the **** with the rest of the world" I think this is very greedy. If you don't need those benefits don't take them just because you can get them because you may be making it difficult for someone in desperate need.
