Sorry to break it to you this way *********, but the world around us really might be an illusion. Physicists are launching an experiment to determine whether or not our universe is three dimensional, and there's a chance that by this time next year we'll find out that the universe is actually two dimensional instead.

As you can imagine this isn't the easiest thing to determine. According to The Verge, physicists are conducting the experiment using a holometer that consists of "two high-intensity laser beams -- beams that are roughly equivalent to 200,000 laser pointers....sent perpendicularly down two 40 meter arms." The beams are reflected a certain way so that if their brightness fluctuates it would mean that space is constantly vibrating...just like a 2D wave. This result would completely destroy the way we currently perceive the world around us.

Check out the full article here for a more detailed explanation and let me know what you think. Have you suspected that everything is an illusion all along? Or is this a little too "out there" for you?

Quantum physics tells us there are 10 or 11 dimensions, depending on whether you are talking about string theory or M-theory.

Length, width, depth, and time are the easy ones you should know. Fifth and sixth deal with branches of futures based on choices. (I am taking some liberties to make this easy to follow, think alternate futures).

The rest deal with other universes, and take too long to explain. But here is a cool movie that explains it all so most can understand. (Well, i reviewed it, many brains will start to hurt around the 5: minute mark ;)

The world is 3 dimensional last time I checked. Of course more dimensions could be added depending on definitions.

3D is only apparent because of the agles that photons reflect off atoms and molecules.

Nope, sorry to disappoint the so called experts, but we are and have been living a reality of life and any illusions to that will have come from the best liar in creation...satan. Now, those that want to believe such nonsense...go ahead, but a real reality of more life is coming and that reality is going to be more than a blessing, its going to be powerful beyond words.

What is a 2 degree hologram? Can anyone,in the least, imagine anything that is 2 dimensional? It's another scientific pseudo-intellectual concept/theory as is the "big bang." Lol, likely conceived from some researchers experimenting with LSD. :).

Yeah can you explain to me what exactly it would mean if we WERE in the 2d dimension, I'm confused as to what the whole point is, or what the ramifications of being 2d are in whatever way.

p.s. Lol about the LSD thing

Yes, the human mind can not envision anything being 2 dimensional Even a sketch upon paper is, really still 3 dimensional . A piece of paper is about .003 inches thick.

I see.. thanks for trying anyway!

Well I'm used to science fiction theories about life. But, that makes NO sense. Sorry. Will keep open mind though, like always...:)

With all due respect, are they trying to proselytize Hinduism through science?

the world is an illusion

[Buddha was basically a Reform Hindu.]

Read about this yesterday, and it's neat, but no, I don't buy we are living in a hologram.

Was this an X-file plot or Outer Limits plot or Twilight Zone plot or One Step Beyond plot or Krazy Kat plot? I need to know before I go to sleep and wake up in another dimension, so hurry, please!

The idea that we are living in a computer simulation is another theory that has been proposed. Seems similar to the 2d hologram theory without needing the hologram. Links to a couple of articles that I found interesting.

No, I believe that the same way that the surface of the Earth is a 2 dimensional construct that rests on a 3 dimensional object this whole universe is a 3 dimensional skin that lies on the surface of a 4 dimensional object.

Hey! Explain since you appear to understand what you're talking about!

It's an interesting theory but probably not true. What will we do what if it is?

yes,you are all in a Matrix type of universe. i for one,am real.

It's... you... why would you ask this question on *this* site?!

It's not a hologram like what the picture means. It's... The people here argue about if Joan Rivers was funny. Why didn't you, instead of posting this here, go down to your nearest kindergarten and ask the kids if they support keynesian economics?

Maybe a Zero-D Hologram; They should think up an experiment to check that out after the 2-D experiment fails.

I mean, this sounds like a cool experiment and all, but I really don't care.

With all the lies told by our supposed masters, I wouldn't doubt it for a minute. I've actually been hearing about this for years. I know for a fact that we do live a life of illusion, everything you were taught is a lie.

Since matter is discrete (quantum), space is almost certainly discrete as well. If that's true, then the finitude of information composing (or contained within) the universe is completely a function of the extent of the universe. That's true whether or not some aspect of the universe is holographic.

But IMO, while the total structure may or may not be 2D, reality does have a holographic aspect.
