Professor Michio Kaku: Crop circles made with GPS, lasers and microwave ovens

Posted on 08.2.11

By Eric W. Dolan

Michio Kaku, a popular author and professor of Theoretical Physics at the City College of New York, appeared Tuesday on Fox News to explain some theories about how crop circles are created.

He said one way to make crop circles was to simply use a wooden board and some rope.

“Now with GPS, lasers and microwave ovens, you can create intricate patterns as detailed as any you see in science fiction movies,” Kaku explained.

Actually it's a plank of wood attached to strips of cloth or rope. You basically walk forward on the plank to gently flatten the crops to create the pattern. There's several groups that've been doing this for years, nowadays they even do it with permission from the land owners.

Some of them seem a little too intricate for just the plank method. I've seen basic circles made that way, but some of them are so complex I can't imagine that there wasn't more to it. (See, for example, the illustration graphic I used.)

My money's still on E.T. :)

I think it depends on the size of the plank you use and what sort of planning is used before-hand. You can probably use 'hand-planks' for fine detail work
