A custodian that works in my building told me he was ashamed to tell people his job, I don't think he should be and I told him that, but nevertheless he still feels that way.

I'm retired, but my late mother used to tell me that all work is honorable, as long as it is legal.

He shouldn't be, he should be grateful to have a job. My BFF was a janitor for years till she was promoted to maintenance supervisor. Then they privatized and she lost her job.

It's really awful that we live in a society where people are made to feel ashamed of honest **** work.

I am not ashamed of my job in the least. I see no reason for your friend to be ashamed either. He is performing a very important job for everyone in your building. He should be proud of such important and honest work.

I loved my job when I was working full time as a LPN with new moms and their babies. Now I enjoy my job as an occasional babysitter though I would like to be doing it part time.

I have never been ashamed of even the dirtiest ******* jobs I have done. I would be ashamed to feed at the government teat.

Not only am I not ashamed of my job, I'm actually proud of it, I'm an architecture student, and I also work in an architecture office at the same time, and when I don't, I help my mother in her travelling agencey (learned lots of things and met many people).. but any way, no one should be ashamed of his job.

Even if one was a custodian, why would one be ashamed of it? It's honest work.

The only job I would be ashamed of, perhaps, is a professional gambler.

My job isn't glamorous or exciting or high paying, but I make an honest living. I used to work housekeeping at a couple local hotels. I've DJ'd at bars, and my husband and I both still do DJ work and costume character appearances for birthdays and such. Currently, I make pizza for a living.

I am very proud of my jobs. I have worked **** to make sure I was the best I can be and today get to enjoy the fruits of a good reputation. I would be proud in any vocation because whatever the job I would try to be the best at it. The only job beneath me would be no job.

I hear ya. I'm glad you encouraged him.
And, no, I'm not ashamed though I was a bit at first. For many years I was the security dept. head for a local high school until my position was eliminated due to budget cuts. I'd invested so many years there at that point, I accepted a position at the Middle School working with kids in Spec. Ed.------I found it began to grow on me, and I work now with kids on a variety of subjects. I love it when I can get one to grasp a concept or master a reading piece they didn't feel capable of. But......who knew right?
Sometimes people remain where they are because change can be very scary......sometimes that change comes "for" you, and you don't have a choice. Were it me, (and if the person seems safe & rational), I'd stop and talk with them and encourage them to take some afternoon or night courses in something they enjoy. Who knows, it could lead to another occupation.

No and never have been. My dad taught me many years ago that every job is important and be proud of what you do. If you dig ditches be the best ditch digger there is. If it is honest work than that is all that counts. I was a warehouseman for ten years and proud of it.I could palatalize case lots very quickly, fill customer orders in a flash, and did the best job I could do. I did that for all the other jobs I had during my working career doing the best job I could do, I had 27 jobs during my working years and my resume shows I am qualified for many things..............

I do fraud detection for the Medicaid system - it's my job to protect the tax-payers and the poorest members of society from dishonest providers who would steal from them

Exactly. Even the most insignificant job will go unnoticed until the day that person does not show up for work. Then all **** breaks loose when they discover just how much that one person actually does.

I have made a effort over the years to greet custodians and service workers and chat with them Most of them are totally ignored by the general public and feel invisible.

I had a good friend that was the custodian where I worked, we used to go to lunch together. He was a good family man and passed away from cancer a few years ago. Many folks never talk to these folks or have the superiority attitude with them. I don't get where folks are sometimes but sad to say the least..........

It is an attitude that the wages of their job makes them better than those making less money. My attitude is that the character of a person is far more important.

Anyone who is working and supporting themselves and their family should never feel ashamed of what they do. The only ones who should feel shame are those who don't work at all and live off **** working people, like that custodian.
