I just read an article at Scientific American's site. The number one factor that contributes to SIDS? Altitude.

The one single thing that mothers can do to reduce the likelihood of SIDS? Give baby a pacifier.

Of course, SIDS is just one of many possible causes of infant mortality, but the article is informative!
